Dear Friend,

Travelling abroad for business or pleasure is one of the most exciting things anyone can do, however, this can become a nightmare if you become sick and do not have travel medical insurance.

For over 25 years I have marketed Life and Health insurance policies and have told my clients that they needed health insurance for injuries or medical emergencies. In fact not only do you need insurance in the country you reside but you also need an international plan for life threatening illnesses that may have to be treated overseas. Recently this advice came to mean much more to me.

A Day I’ll Never Forget

I love to hike and climb mountains and I own an Adventure tour company. One day my husband and I guided a group of international students on a tour that would change our lives forever.

My husband who is a diabetic hiked for over an hour high in the hills of Jamaica. He was excited and did not remember to pack snacks to munch on to keep his blood sugar stable. He was feeling tired and sluggish but did not inform us. We had just reached the ruins of a Coffee Plantation when he stepped from one rock to another and picked up a skid.

It happened so fast! In one split second he was high in the air and then on the ground. He was knocked almost unconscious. To make matters worse we were deep in the hills with no access to transportation.

We knew we had to get very creative to him down the mountains and made a stretcher out of sticks. With the help of the strongest men available we started our long trek to get him back to the main. We needed to have him airlifted out of the mountains but with no insurance coverage for this or cash to cover this immediately we had no option but to further risk his life by going on foot.

Now I understand what medical evacuation means and why it is important to have proper medical coverage at home or when travelling overseas.

Did you know that many domestic plans are not designed for international travel? If you are one of the persons who make a ‘to do list’ when travelling, which includes your money, documents and all your personal effects but no travel insurance consider the following facts:

  • Over 1.3 million people are injured in auto accidents every year
  • Over 50 Million are injured every year
  • Over 400,000 drowning occur every year
  • One in three person do not buy travel insurance and do not have emergency savings
  • Violence, Tsunamis, earthquake and terrorism affect travelers
  • Most travelers buy inadequate coverage
  • Domestic policies do not carry Evacuation and this can cost up to $100,000
  • Domestic policies do not cover returning your mortal remains
